The saddest line spoken anywhere:

"Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow"

- Macbeth (upon hearing that Lady Macbeth is dead)

He goes on:

"Creeps in this petty pace from day to day
To the last syllable of recorded time;
And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
the way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!...."

Macbeth -- a murderer goaded on to his crimes by his now dead wife.

I think Hemingway's shortest short story, 6 words, gives Macbeth a run for its money for sad:

For sale: baby shoes, never worn.
